Why is my device not detected?

Make sure you are using a compatible device (see this list). Also, make sure your device is recognized by Windows Explorer; if it isn't, there's a system-level issue that needs to be resolved. First, try connecting through a different USB port (preferably not through a USB hub). If this doesn't work, it is possible that your device uses "MTP", in which case you must have a working installation of WMP 11 or greater on your computer.

Note 1: If Windows mistakenly detects your device as a "Camera/Scanner", you will need to reinstall it:

1. Open My Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager.
2. Plug in your device.
3. Find and right-click your device in Device Manager, and select "Uninstall" (accept the confirmation panels).
4. Wait for the computer to go through some motions.
5. Unplug your phone.
6. Restart your computer.
7. Plug in the phone. You should now (hopefully) see Windows detecting an MTP device (not a Camera or Scanner).

Note 2: Sony Ericsson phones connected in "File transfer" or "Mass Storage" mode must have a properly formatted memory stick; let the phone format the card to make sure it's got all the required marker files (this will ensure Media Sync detects it).
